Many South Bay trees suffer from prolonged dry spells. Symptoms include leaf scorch, sparse canopies, and branch dieback. Deep, infrequent watering during the summer is best, especially for redwoods, which struggle in hotter, drier inland areas. Native oaks, on the other hand, prefer dry summers, as too much irrigation can cause root rot.
In Santa Clara County, invasive pests like the polyphagous shot hole borer, sudden oak death pathogen (Phytophthora ramorum), and aphids are common. Aphids leave sticky “honeydew” that can attract ants and sooty mold, while borers cause dieback and oozing sap. Regular monitoring and early intervention are critical. This is a common problem with large street trees in San Jose, especially Liquidambar
and London Planes. Avoid cutting major roots, which can destabilize the tree. Instead, consult an arborist about selecting replacement trees better suited for tight urban spaces.
Even in the South Bay, fire danger is a concern, especially in hillside neighborhoods. The key is managing vegetation: clear deadwood, maintain defensible space around structures, and prune lower branches to reduce ladder fuels. Healthy, well-maintained trees can actually slow fire spread rather than fuel it. Learn more wildfire prevention tips for San Jose and Santa Clara County homeowners.
Depending on the location of the tree and the tree’s size, a permit may be required. Street trees require a permit regardless of size and our arborists can work with the City of San Jose’s Department of Transportation to figure out a permit. If the tree is on private property and is larger than 38-inches in circumference at 4.15 feet above ground, a permit is required from the City of San Jose’s Planning Department. As always, if you are unsure, our arborists can assist you!
